Well-Child Visits: Why Healthy Children Need Check-Ups Too

Families in the waiting area at Josma Health children's hospital

Many families only see a clinic when a child is unwell. But some of the most valuable visits happen when your child is perfectly healthy — because that’s when we can measure, screen and prevent.

What happens at a well-child visit? We weigh and measure your child and plot the results on their growth curve — the single best early-warning tool in child health. We check developmental milestones: how your child moves, talks, plays and relates to others for their age. We review the immunization card and catch up any missed doses, screen vision and hearing at the right ages, check for anaemia where indicated, and deworm and supplement vitamin A on schedule. Just as importantly, it’s protected time for your questions — feeding, sleep, behaviour, potty training, school readiness.

Why growth monitoring matters so much. A child can look well while their growth quietly falters. A flattening weight curve is often the first sign of an underlying problem — nutritional, infectious or otherwise — months before other symptoms appear. Caught early, most causes are simple to treat; caught late, they can affect development permanently.

How often should you come? Frequently in the first year (visits align naturally with the immunization schedule), then around every six months through the toddler years, and at least annually for older children and teens. Children with chronic conditions like asthma or sickle cell benefit from a personalised schedule.

Make the most of each visit. Bring the clinic card, a list of your questions, and any observations that have niggled at you — sleep, appetite, behaviour changes. Nothing is too small to mention.

Our well-baby and child wellness clinic runs throughout the week at Josma Health in Kasarani. Book a visit online or walk in — and give your child the check-up that keeps small things small.
